Telling The Truth by Patt Everyone was sitting at Mickey's that night having a drink. When a big mouth from Vice said, "Hey, Ellison, what's up with that partner of yours?" "If you know what's good for you, you'll shut your mouth, Kenner." Jim said angrily. "Oh, the big bad Ellison's going to hurt my partner?" asked Kenner's partner, Lincoln. Jim stared at both men with cold and angry eyes and said, "If you don't shut up soon, I'll close it for you. I mean it." Daring Ellison on, Kenner asked, "So tell us, Ellison, are you fucking your partner?" Jim went for his throat but Blair stood in between them and said, "Jim, this is not how it's going to be. Remember?" "Yes, I'm sleeping with my partner, you fucking idiot. Don't come near us again." Jim said as he walked away from them. Blair just stood there with his mouth hanging open. They had agreed to not come out at the PD and what did Jim do? Come out to two vice cops no less." Conner ran up to Sandburg and asked, "Sandy, what the hell's going on? What's Jim doing?" "Hell if I know, Conner. I think he just fucked us both. What do you think?" Blair asked with a hint of fear in his voice. "No, Sandy, he didn't. He was probably just tired of lying to everyone. I don't blame him. He's in love with you. Why should he have to keep it a secret, right?" she asked. "Well, Conner, I hate to disagree with you but in our line of work it doesn't pay to have no back up coming because we're gay." Blair complained. "Sandburg, no one would do that. You know everyone's behind you and Jim." Brown said. "Henry, I thank you for that support, but you'd be better off to not let folks hear you say that shit. They'll come after you next." Blair said as he headed out of the bar. Simon walked over to Jim at the bar and said, "Jim, what the fuck do you think you were doing?" Eyeing his boss with both the anger and fear that he was feeling, he said, "Sir, you have no idea how it is. We can't let anyone know about us. I'm sick of it. Everyone is always trying to set him up. They find women for him all the time and one of these days he'll leave with someone." "Jim, why in the hell would you believe that?" Simon asked. "Because, Simon, I hear what they say at the precinct. Blair doesn't. But one of these days he will and he'll be gone as soon as he can. He'll leave me just like I believe he would." "I don't agree with you there. In fact, I think you might be selling Blair short." Simon laughed at his own pun. Jim glared at him as he drank his drink silently. Simon just sat down next to Jim and waited for Jim to talk to him. Outside on his way to his car, Conner, Rafe, Joel and Brown all caught up with him. Conner said, "Sandy, you have to come back inside. You know that Jim wouldn't have done that if there wasn't a good reason." "What's the reason, Conner?" Give me one good reason." Blair pleaded with her. "Well," Rafe said, "I have an idea. Jim overhears them all talking about the two of you. Maybe he felt like he should get it out in the open and be done with it." "Rafe, that makes no sense." Blair said trying to understand. "What if someone said something to him about you going out with someone else and Jim felt threatened?" Joel asked. Blair turned to Joel and said, "Joel, did someone say something?" "Well, while in the locker room yesterday," Joel said, "he got really upset and said they were talking about you and some babe and that he couldn't even keep his man. It was bad enough that he couldn't keep his wife but now he couldn't keep his fag." "Joel." Conner said in shock. "Well, he asked, and that's what they said. Jim's been putting up with this shit for months now. He didn't want to upset Blair." Joel said. "It must be terrible being able to hear all that shit." Brown said sadly. "Yeah, it must be." Rafe said in agreement hoping that Blair would calm down and go back inside. "So, do you all think that Jim thinks I'm going to leave him?" Blair asked truthfully. "Sandy, I don't think he wants to believe it but he has no chance. He's got the self-esteem of a doorknob." Conner said shaking her head. "The self-esteem of a door knob? Conner, a door knob hasn't got any self-esteem." Blair said. "Exactly. See, that's what I meant. He has none, Sandy, and he loves you so much. But he's so afraid you'll leave him and he'll be all alone again. So, I think he was pushing you away tonight." "Well, shit! He sure can be a stupid fuck, can't he?" Blair asked smiling. All four friends started laughing and said at the same time. "Yes." "Well, I think it's time I go back inside for some damage control. What do you all think?" Blair asked. "We wouldn't miss it for the world, Blair." Joel replied. The friends all walked into the bar. Everyone got quiet and Blair made his way back to Jim, slid up on a stool next to him and said, "Wanna go in the restroom and talk to me or do you want me to fucking embarrass you right here?" "Chief, let it go, okay? We'll talk later when I get home. You go on home. I'll talk to you then." Jim turned away from Blair. "You stupid fuck." Blair yelled out. Jim turned to Blair and said, "Please, not here, Chief." "Jim, they're afraid of anything new. It's not their fault. They can't help it. They don't know what to do or to say with gay men. They just need to know that we're all right and we're not going to corrupt them or anything." "Chief, our friends will always be behind us but we're going to have those guys on our asses all the time. I really don't think you need that shit." "Don't you think that we should give them the benefit of the doubt? Give them a chance, Jim. We'll take it one day at a time. I love you, man. I don't want to spend it with some woman from robbery." When Blair said that Jim looked up and said, "All right, who told you that?" "Who didn't? Now I don't want to hear that shit again. Do you understand? You're mine, and I'm yours." "Okay, Chief. I'll settle for that right now but we're not done with this subject yet." "Oh, yeah, we are, tough guy and don't bring it up again." Blair moved really close to Jim and whispered in Jim's ear, "I want to take you home and fuck you senseless. Actually, I don't think that would take too long the way you've been acting." Jim laughed out loud then pulled Blair into his arms and right there in front of everyone laid a lip lock on Blair. It was done with such tenderness and love that Blair melted. As Blair pulled away he looked up into Jim's eyes and said, "Oh man, you are like so forgiven." "Good because I really want to take you up on that offer you just made." "Jim, we need to say goodbye to our friends first. We can't just blow everyone off. The only one I want blown off will be you, tough guy." Blair said through a big smile. "Chief, you're going to make me suffer, aren't you?" "Yup. I am." "Okay, I can handle that. Now let's go say goodbye to our friends and get this show on the road." Jim said as he got down off the stool. "We really have great friends, Jim. We're very lucky, do you know that?" Blair asked. "And you know what else? You're going to talk to me when you hear something in the bullpen instead of keeping it to yourself, is that understood?" "Understood, now let's see about our goodbye's Blair." Jim said quietly as he moved over to Simon and the others. Simon, seeing them walk up, said, "Well, if it isn't the kissing bandit. Jesus, Jim, do you ever do anything half way?" "No, Sir. Blair complains if I don't let him come." Jim said with a big smile. They all started laughing except Blair and Simon. Blair smacked Jim on the shoulder and said, "We'll see who doesn't get to come." "Well everyone, it's time for us to get home. We're still newlyweds, don't you know?" Jim said as he started dragging Blair out of the bar. "Goodbye everyone. See you tomorrow in the bullpen." Blair complained as he was drug out the door. As they got to the pickup, Blair said, "I love you, big man. So could we use the siren and get home fast?" "Why I think that could be arranged." Jim said as he put the siren on the dash and turned it on. Telling the truth did pay and here he'd thought it would be the opposite. Life is good. End Telling The Truth.
